Aviation Communities Are Buzzing with Light Sports Aircraft

Light Sports Aircraft (LSA) are an exciting new area of aviation that has spurred much interest to new and old aviators alike. It is a very exciting type of flying though it does have a few limitations. More pilots are opting towards this new genre of flying and are looking for places to fly. Aviation Communities can offer an exciting and affordable way for pilots to have, keep and fly these little possessions right at their own home.

Besides being easier to become licensed to fly in (unless you are already a rated pilot in which case you are all set) these LSA aircraft have a few additional limitations. They are limited to 1320 lbs gross weight (fully loaded). IF a sea plane, they may weight a few pounds more. There are also speed limitations. They can’t go faster, in cruise, than 138 mph and most stall at a speed below 51 miles per hour. Stall speed is the speed where the wings can no longer fly. Seating is limited to 2 seats. They can only have a single engine and their wheels must always be down (no retractable allowed in LSA).

Many older pilots, feeling very healthy, none the less worry about the day the medical examiner says, “You can’t fly anymore”. This can be a sad day to a person who has loved aviation all his or her life. One big benefit is that with LSA there is no medical exam required to fly. Pilots are left to make their own judgments as to their own fitness to fly. This can be a big deal to many aviators. Private pilots as well as seasoned past airline pilots can find that their deepest desires to fly easily tamed by the new LSA aircraft. After years of flying, a large number of pilots begin to seek something more simple and basic, that uses small amounts of fuel, cheaper to operate, yet still allows them to get aloft and enjoy the thrills of the most basic aspects to aviation.

Though simple in many ways, many of these new LSA models are all but simple. Many are made of very modern composite materials, have sophisticated navigation and other avionics and have other qualities that turn the heads of the most ardent pilots. And with 100′s of manufacturers out there, the competition is helping to keep the prices in line. Also, as the fleet ages, we can expect prices to come down even more.

With more and more getting into aviation by way of LSA, there becomes the problem of where to keep these little puppies. Most of us love to have our most valued possessions close by – in our garage or out in the yard. With any type of aircraft, including LSA, this poses a problem. Runways are required to takeoff and land these airplanes. Usually this means keeping one’s airplane several miles away at the local airport and enduring commutes back and forth to fly or just “be” with you airplane.

Fortunately, airplanes can be stored near home. There are aviation communities out there (most every state in the United States has them) where the homes have hangar (small or large) and the communities share one or more runways. You will see, in these communities, airplanes, large and small, taxiing along the same streets as the cars, as they make their way to or from the runway. These unique communities are populated with the most interesting folks who share a common interest. Living in one of these communities, you can decide you want to be in the air and literally be flying within minutes. What freedom!

As of mid-2011 (the time this article is written) there are really excellent deals out there on lots and home in these aviation communities. The real estate crash affected these communities too, though not quite as much as the mainstream residential market.

If you have ever dreamed to be a pilot, or if you are a current pilot who has not flown in a while or even seasoned and active, and dreamed of being able to fly with the birds on a moment’s notice, free of large airports, free of the commute to the airport, perhaps it’s a good time to get out there and see what is available in your local fly-in community.

One can but a hangar home that is already built or a lot to build upon. Right now purchasing a piece of land and having that “perfect” home and hangar designed can be an excellent enterprise because there are some excellent construction deals out there (mid-2011). There are many builders who are just looking for something to do. Why not take advantage?

Whether you are a seasoned pilot looking for a simpler aviation game, or a newbie looking for a bit easier way to get that flying ticket, LSA offers an amazing opportunity. And, as in most areas of life, the truth is that there is no other time than now to act and begin anything new.

Scuba Diving in Hawaii

Hawaii will always make you release your stress from your daily activities. But did you know that going underneath Hawaii’s sea level is as fun as above? Through scuba diving, you can definitely witness how amazing the reefs, the different species and the shipwrecks that can only be seen below the sea. Furthermore, the temperature underneath is just right for your body to handle.

You may want to go to Oahu if you have no experience in scuba diving to undergo some lessons. Moreover, it won’t take very long for you to learn the important things. On the very same day, you can already go underneath the sea and explore Hawaii’s wonders.

Oahu is the place to be for wreck diving. The fish aren’t as impressive as diving on a reef. However, I think that everyone should do a wreck dive at least once. It’s impressive to the power of the ocean to sink those huge heavy ships. It’s amazing to see how the fish adapt to this alien object in their natural habitat.

Another place to go scuba diving is the Ka’awaloa Cove which is situated on western part of Hawaii. Although it is only reachable by a boat, a lot of companies can assist you to get there. Night diving is also possible in Kailua-Kona where divers go scuba diving. Furthermore, you should carry a light with you if you want to attract some plankton. Plankton is the primary food of giant manta rays.

The plankton in turn, draw the rays. There are many tour companies offering such night time entertainment. Red Hill is another popular dive site near Kona. It has lava formations that are a breathtaking sight to say the least. The sun reflects light of the lava tubes, thus the name Red Hill. In the deeper water off the Kona coast there are over thirty dive areas accessible only by boat. One site not to be missed is an airplane wreck near Keahole Point.

The island of Maui offers it own spectacular dive sites. Molokini is a volcanic crater in the bottom of the pacific. It has steep ledges and walls that create an amazing site. This particular crater attracts such sea life as reef sharks, manta rays, sea turtles and a huge variety of tropical fish. This site should be on the top of your list when visiting Hawaii. For a tamer and less crowded taste of scuba diving in Maui, try Black Rock or Makena State park.

These are only few of the diving spots in Hawaii. In fact, they are so many that you couldn’t visit all of them even if you’re staying in Hawaii for one year.

Palm Springs Power Baseball

On your next trip to the California desert, be sure to visit Palm Springs Stadium and the Palm Springs Power Baseball team. Palm Springs stadium watching the Power is the place to be on a balmy summer night after hot day in the desert.

Based in Palm springs, the team has supplied a number of players to such major league teams as the Chicago Cubs, San Francisco Giants, Oakland Athletics, Cincinnati Reds, and Philadelphia Phillies to name a few.

When I first arrived at the Stadium for the 7:00 contest, I noticed the ease in finding parking since their ample area on either side of the stadium. As I walked thru the gates, the strong aroma of hot dogs and cotton candy filled the air. Seating is very simple since it is all bleachers and the view is unbeatable. I was able to follow the ball and the player movements very well along with taking in some of the emotion and expressions that come with the game.

Playing in the Southern California Collegiate Baseball Association, the Power had an impressive 2010 campaign going 19-1 in conference play and finishing 33-4 overall. In between the homeruns, strikeouts, and double of the walls, is Rocky the Ram – the team mascot. The Ram gives the children a reason to smile as he enjoys the game with them and has a little fun along the way. You’ll notice Rocky since he’s the only Ram wearing a Power jersey with double zero on the back.

The desert is the perfect place to play and catch a baseball game. Night games under the lights are fantastic as they give off a feeling of taking a trip back thru time when the game meant fathers and sons sharing popcorn as well as the reason to walk the eight hitter in the lineup with the pitcher coming up and the bases now loaded.

I would highly advise to dress accordingly when the games are in the middle of the day. However, a cool beverage and some ice cream can definitely ease the summer heat. The friendly confines, the team atmosphere, and good baseball all equal to a memorable experience that is worth the well-affordable price. And remember, there are no long lines be it at the concession stand or in the parking lot making this a great way to spend an afternoon or a balmy evening on your next trip to Palm Springs and the desert resort cities.
