What is The Best Car for a Beginner?
New drivers can frequently fall at either end of a particularly wide spectrum. To the left, meet Mr. Confident, ready to drive at the age of nine and a prodigy of car loving folks, Mr. Confident wants to drive fast and imagines that he can handle any car his folks can buy him.
To the right, it’s Mr. Meek, a guy who would likely prefer the 2 hour bus ride but who is fortunate enough to have access to a vehicle.
Both these newly licensed drivers require the same priorities in a vehicle, a safe and sturdy car with minimum potential of break down and minimum burn on the pocket when it comes to repairs and petrol costs.
Most people have a favourite car manufacturer and an opinion about what makes for a trustworthy auto-mobile. ‘Reliable’ is the main consideration when it comes to a vehicle for an amateur driver. ‘Economy’ is the 2nd most important consideration.
New cars drop in price as soon as they leave the lot. A recommendation is to go, if you can, for a car that has had one decent owner and not a huge amount of mileage put on the clock. Finding a car like this may take a bit of patience. Keep your eye on the classifieds and contact the most reputable used car dealers in your area.
If you are lucky you may strike upon a car that has been made ‘like new’ by the mechanic of a used car lot. It might not pick up the ladies but hopefully if you’re buying for a teen, just having a car is going to mean a boost in street cred.
If this is your first car and you have just passed your test, ask your friends and family what they recommend in a car and what they think are the safest and easiest cars to drive. Ignore Uncle Bob when he tells you it’s an Aston Martin.
