Iceland Vacation: Camping in Reykjavik
Iceland is expensive, but for less than $10 you can always setup a tent at the Reykjavik Campground. If you choose to travel without a tent, the Reykjavik Campsite also rents the equipment for a small fee.
In a city, and country for that matter, where a cup of coffee averages $3, camping in Reykjavik is by far the cheapest way to see to Iceland’s vibrant boutique laden capital city on a budget. Sure, traveling in Iceland is expensive, but the Reykjavik Campsite offers up tenting on a grassy lawn for under $9 a person in Reykjavik. In fact, they actually rent tents as well for an extra $10 a day if you don’t want to carry your tent with you.
Just a short walk from Reykjavik’s downtown area, the campground offers its guest clean bathrooms, showers and a lot of hot water. Additionally, the Reykjavik Campground has a kitchen area with hot plates, numerous picnic tables and, my favorite, free WiFi. The campground is also operated in conjunction with the Reykjavik City Hostel, which is located right next to the campsites. The hostel provides a common area, more free WiFi, bathrooms with showers and laundry.
The Reykjavik Campground is open from May 15 to Sept. 15, and is located less than 2 miles from Reykjavik’s historic city center. With space for 650 people, the campground rarely fills up; therefore, reservations aren’t required and spaces can not be reserved.
The Reykjavik Campground, as well as camping in Iceland in general, is definitely a great way to travel to this beautiful country while on a budget. One bonus to staying at the campground is that it is located right next to Laugardalslaug, one of the city’s largest thermal pools in the capital city and another great cheap, fun option when visiting the city.
