Remembering The Meaning Of Memorial Day Observance
[I:http://freeweb-articles.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2011/03/KayMagnolia23.jpg]There are many stories as to where Memorial Day actually got it’s beginnings. No one is really sure where this day of remembrance honoring those who gave their lives protecting this country originated.
Waterloo, New York was declared officially, by President Lyndon Johnston, as the birth place of this day. It is, however, hard to be proven, as to the origins of this special day remembering our military dead. Most cities and towns across America do celebrate the day which is now celebrated in May, on the final Monday each year.
We celebrate a day of honoring our fallen heroes each year the last Monday in the month of May and has been celebrated that way each year since congress declared it a National Federal Holiday in 1971. Many Congressmen and many military organizations are not happy celebrating it on the last Monday in may because it creates a three day weekend for all and many believe this takes away from the real meaning of the day.
Since the late 1950′s, 1200 soldiers from an Infantry group, have been placing small American flags on more than 260,000 gravestones in Arlington National Cemetery. This is done on the Thursday before the sacred day. The Boy Scouts and Cub Scouts in St. Louis, Missouri place 150,000 flags on military graves at Jefferson Barracks as a good deed. They do this every year.
To educate again about the “National Moment of Remembrance”, and remind Americans of the true meaning, a bill was passed in 2000. This simply asks that at 3PM local time, everyone voluntarily stop whatever they are doing and observe in their own way a moment of silent respect for those fallen men and women who have given their all for their country.
Military personal and organizations and groups from all over the country do take this day serious and they will spend all day honoring the fallen heroes. Memorial Day means so much to so many we can only hope that the trend will reverse and once again the American people will enjoy this special day honoring our special heroes.
