Is An AV Degree Right For You?
The AV industry is growing at a phenomenal rate, so it is a good career option. There are opportunities in several different individual industries for people with audio visual degrees. The most obvious is the media industry, but AV engineers are also needed in advertising, marketing, conferencing, construction and entertainment industries like theatre and music.
As we incorporate technology further in our everyday lives, audio visual specialists are becoming more and more in demand. Most industry sectors now require expert technicians and as the area of expertise grows so too do the types of job under the audio visual banner. Dependent on your university of choice, there will be a number of different study options available to you on an audio visual degree course.
Many courses are titled Audio Visual Communication or Audio Visual Media wherein you will study the theory and practice of television, film, radio, photography and interactive art. In such instances you will be able to specialise and choose a study path of your choice. Modules on such a course could include; Audience Psychology, Scriptwriting, Lighting for Television and more.
Which AV degree is right for you is dependant, in part, on what area of the industry you want to work in. If you want to be a lighting engineer within the industry then a degree in lighting is an obvious choice. However, even then you would need to decide on what area of the business you would like to start in, the skills needed for theatre and concert lighting are different from those needed to provide a lighting solution for a building or large private residence.
Other University Degree options that are audio visual based include sound Design Technology BSc, Sound and Multimedia Technology BSc, Design For Moving Image BA, Audio Design Production, Popular Music and Record Production or Live and Studio Sound BSc.
Before you settle on an AV degree it is very important to do your research so that you do not end up getting a degree that does not allow you easy access to your chosen field. If you know what you are interested in doing, start your research by looking for those jobs on the internet and make a note of the degrees that those job adverts are calling for. The universities that offer AV degrees are another great source of information, so talk to them about your degree choices and study the details of those courses that they recommend. Contact job agencies that specialise within the AV industry, they have their finger on the pulse of the industry and know what their clients are looking for now and are likely to be looking for in the future.
